MAKKAH, October 2, 2026 — Saudi authorities have firmly rejected viral reports circulating on social media that claimed security forces had foiled a suicide bombing attempt at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, insisting the man detained at Islam’s holiest site was arrested for harassing passersby and spreading panic — not for carrying out any attack.

Viral Video Sparks Online Panic

A video showing Saudi security personnel restraining a man inside the Grand Mosque complex spread rapidly across social media on Thursday, accompanied by unverified claims that the man was wearing an explosive vest and had approached the Kaaba — the cube-shaped sanctuary at the heart of the mosque — before being intercepted, Anadolu Agency reported. The footage and the accompanying claims quickly generated alarm given the site’s profound religious significance and the enormous crowds of worshippers and pilgrims it draws every day.

Some online accounts alleged the suspected bomber had intended to detonate an explosive device inside the mosque and had managed to get close to the Kaaba before being stopped. Those claims circulated widely for hours without any official confirmation, according to reports.

Official Denial

Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Public Security issued a clarification on X late on October 1, dismissing the bombing claims as false. “Security authorities in the Holy Capital arrested a person for harassing passers-by and spreading fear and panic among them, and the matter was dealt with immediately,” the statement said.

“The security authorities confirm that there is no truth to the claims being circulated regarding the incident,” it added.

Officials said the detained man was dealt with immediately under legal procedures and his case was subsequently referred to the Public Prosecution, UrduPoint reported. Authorities provided no further details about the man’s identity or the exact circumstances of the arrest.

Officials also urged the public to rely only on official sources for information regarding security incidents at the holy sites, cautioning that some of the reports circulating online were not based on fact.

Heightened Regional Tensions

The rumors surfaced at a sensitive moment for the Kingdom. Earlier this week, the Saudi-led coalition accused the Iran-backed Houthi militia of striking a power distribution station in Madinah that supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque, an allegation that drew condemnation from Muslim countries and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Saudi air defenses have also intercepted drones and ballistic missiles targeting southern cities in recent days, officials said.

Security around the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah has long been a matter of acute national sensitivity in the Kingdom, and Saudi authorities have repeatedly moved swiftly to debunk rumors of attacks on the holy sites as soon as they surface online.
